The City of Parramatta manages more than 150 playgrounds across the local area, providing safe, accessible and enjoyable spaces where children and families can play, explore and connect. These playgrounds range from large district destinations that attract visitors from across the region to smaller neighbourhood and pocket playgrounds that primarily serve local residents and families within walking distance.

Ambrose Hallen Park is a small neighbourhood park located on Derbyshire Avenue, Toongabbie, beside Toongabbie West Public School, with pedestrian access to Blain Street and Bungaree Road. While modest in size, the park provides valuable local opportunities for play and recreation close to home.

The existing playground has reached the end of its useful life and is due for renewal. Council is proposing to replace the playground equipment and upgrade the space to ensure it remains safe, accessible and enjoyable for local families for years to come.

Council is seeking community feedback to help inform the design of the new playground. Your input will help us understand how the playground is currently used and what is important to the local community as we plan for its replacement.

This local playground is not large enough to consider items such as a flying fox, trampoline or water play.

  • New playground equipment including accessible playing equipment
  • Better connection between the play tower area and swing area with elements like paving, picnic setting, low steppers or balancing equipment to enhance play
  • New rubber softfall surfacing   
  • New bin and relocating to a better position
  • New bubbler and relocating to a better position 
  • Replacement of the bollards with low-fence or non-timber bollards 
  • Repairing the concrete path in and through the playground 
  • Replacement of three seats with backrests and armrests

The existing playground primarily features skill-based play equipment, and is designed for preschool and junior-aged children (0-12 years).

 

Play equipment includes:
 

  • Two platform towers with Lego-style canopies
  • 1.2m plastic wavy slide accessed via stepladder with handrails.
  • Timber arched bridge with metal handrails
  • Chain bridge
  • Hoop climber
  • Tube climber
  • Log roll
  • Monkey bars with hand loops.
  • Wheel panel
  • Panel counters
  • Naughts and crosses panel

A double swing, including:

  • Toddler seat
  • Standard strap seat

 

Other park furniture and infrastructure include:

 

  • Three seats with no armrests 
  • Rubber safety surface 
  • Bin
  • Bubbler
  • Concrete access path 
  • Garden beds
  • Pine bollards fence
  • Signage 

Each year a selection of playgrounds are included in Council’s annual Playground Replacement Program. Playgrounds are selected and identified from an annual playground safety audit report, informed by regular safety inspections of all playgrounds across City of Parramatta. A condition rating is calculated for each playground, which determines its priority within the Replacement Program. When replacing and upgrading playgrounds Council aims to improve accessibility where possible focusing on elements which have been considered alongside the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play framework and principles. These elements include providing accessible equipment, surfaces, seating with armrests and access to playgrounds via pathways. All feedback received during the consultation will be carefully reviewed and considered when designing the new playground and selecting new play equipment.
 

Council will assess the number of requests for particular types of play equipment, identify common themes and concerns raised by the community, and consider these alongside factors such as site constraints, budget, safety requirements, accessibility, maintenance needs, and the overall project scope. This helps ensure the final design balances the needs of different age groups, users, and members of the community.
 

While it may not be possible to incorporate every individual suggestion, sharing your ideas is important. Community feedback plays a key role in shaping the design and helps Council understand which features are most valued by the community, so these can be incorporated wherever possible.

Who is Ambrose Hallen?

Who is Ambrose Hallen?

Ambrose Hallen (1845 -1920) was a legendary farmer and grandson of William Lawson.  Blind from the age of six, he owned a large poultry farm in Ballandella Road, Toongabbie.  In 1893, he won first prize in a special Department of Agriculture event.
