Eric Primrose Reserve, Rydalmere - Playground Replacement

Eric Primrose Reserve Playground has been identified for renewal through Council’s Playground Replacement Program. The existing playground was built around 2008 and is reaching the end of its useful life. The project provides an opportunity to deliver a new playground that better meets the needs of the community and aligns with Council’s commitment to providing safe, accessible and inclusive play spaces. You can find further details on which playgrounds are due for an upgrade here https://www.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/recreation/our-parks/park-upgrades

Council is proposing to relocate the playground closer to the public toilet, ferry wharf and picnic area. The new location offers better access to nearby facilities, improved visibility, and attractive views of the Parramatta River, making it more convenient and enjoyable for families and park visitors.

The existing playground includes:

• Climbing structures and rope play elements
• Double slide and swings
• Fish spring rocker
• Sensory and imaginative play panels
• A bike and scooter track with roundabouts, a zebra crossing and speed hump
• Shade sail, seating and picnic tables

The current playground primarily caters for children aged 0 to 5 years.

The draft design may include:

• New playground equipment for multiple age groups
• Inclusive and accessible play opportunities
• A basket swing and other inclusive play elements
• New rubber softfall surfacing
• A combination of shade sail and tree planting
• New seating, picnic facilities, bins and a bubbler
• Improved pathways connecting the playground to nearby facilities
• The existing bike and scooter track is proposed to be retained and adapted

Community feedback will help inform the draft design. 

The following items are not currently proposed as part of this project:

• Water play

When replacing and upgrading playgrounds, Council aims to improve accessibility where possible, focusing on elements which have been considered alongside the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play framework and principles. These elements include providing at least two pieces of accessible equipment, accessible surfaces, seating with armrests and access to playgrounds via pathways. All feedback received during the consultation will be carefully reviewed and considered when designing the new playground and selecting new play equipment.
 

Council will assess the number of requests for particular types of play equipment, identify common themes and concerns raised by the community, and consider these alongside factors such as site constraints, budget, safety requirements, accessibility, maintenance needs, and the overall project scope. This helps ensure the final design balances the needs of different age groups, users, and members of the community.
 

While it may not be possible to incorporate every individual suggestion, sharing your ideas is important. Community feedback plays a key role in shaping the design and helps Council understand which features are most valued by the community, so these can be incorporated wherever possible.

Not necessarily. The types of play equipment included in the new playground will be determined through community feedback and we will also need to consider factors such as site constraints, accessibility requirements, maintenance needs, safety standards, and the overall project scope.

This means some existing play elements may not be replaced like-for-like if community feedback indicates they are no longer a priority, or if alternative play opportunities are identified as better meeting the needs of the community.

If there are specific play element features from the current playground that you would like to see retained, we encourage you to share your feedback. Your input will help Council understand which play features are most valued by the community and should be considered in the new playground design.

Yes. After this round one consultation period closes, all community feedback will be reviewed and used to help develop a draft concept design for the new playground.
 

Once the draft concept design is ready, Council will share it with the community for further feedback before the design is finalised and construction begins. This provides another opportunity for the community to review the proposed playground and help refine the design.
