Greening Albion Street

Project overview

Research shows that Albion Street in Harris Park is one of the hottest streets in our local government area. Previous community consultations in Harris Park have also highlighted that new tree plantings and enhancing the local streetscape is a priority for the community. In response, Council has undertaken a feasibility study exploring opportunities for tree planting along Albion Street and has now developed two exciting concept plan options for the community to review. By introducing street trees, we aim to provide more shade, create a cooler and more inviting environment, and enhance the overall amenity of the street, including improvements to footpaths.

Due to limited space, the proposed tree planting will require some adjustments to the current allocations for the road, footpaths, and parking. However, these changes are intended to provide substantial long-term benefits for both residents and visitors, making Albion Street an even more vibrant and attractive place to live and visit. Your feedback is essential in determining the next steps to ensure the greening of Albion Street reflects the community's aspirations. The three options we developed for your consideration are as follows:

-

Option 1:

-

  • Trees planted in the parking lane on the western side of Albion Street (this will result in some loss of parking)
  • Retain two-way traffic movement
  • Retain parallel parking alignment
  • Retain existing footpaths

If Option 1 receives a majority vote, Council will proceed to the detailed design phase and undertake further investigations to determine the exact number of parking spaces that will be required to be removed. If we proceed to detailed design on this option we will focus on utilising the unused space, particularly the spaces between parked vehicles and driveways, to minimise the loss of parking where feasible.

-

Option 2:

-

  • Footpath extended on the western side of Albion Street
  • Trees planted within the extended footpath area
  • Albion Street converted into one-way only traffic movement (no loss of parking)
  • Retain parallel parking alignment
  • Retain existing footpath on the eastern side of street

If the community identifies Option 2 as the preferred choice, we will conduct additional consultation to share more detailed design information and gather further feedback.

-

Option 3:

-

  • No change, I do not support trees planting on Albion Street, Harris Park.
