The Australian and NSW governments are investing $200 million to upgrade the intersection of Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road to ease congestion, increase safety and improve travel times and connectivity to Sydney Olympic Park and Homebush for all road users.
During community consultation on the preferred option, Transport for NSW received overwhelming feedback from the community around the complexity, unfamiliarity and safety of the design. Transport for NSW heard that you wanted the roundabout to be upgraded to a more traditional traffic light intersection and that key stakeholders wanted to minimise impacts to Bicentennial and Bressington parks.
A summary of feedback received and how it has been responded to has been provided in the Consultation Report which is now available for the community to view on the project webpage.
In response, Transport for NSW has developed a new design and prepared a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) to identify potential environmental and community impacts from the design and proposed mitigation measures.
Transport for NSW are now inviting feedback on the new design, a more traditional traffic light intersection and REF until 11:59pm on Sunday 18 January 2026.

The new design
Transport for NSW are changing the way people use the intersection of Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road. The new design will provide a safer and more efficient connection for the thousands of people driving, walking and riding bikes through the intersection each day.
Proposed improvements include:
- Replacing the existing roundabout with a more traditional traffic light intersection
- Widening and adjusting the road corridors to provide new lanes on all approaches to the intersection
- Upgrading the existing footpath along the northern side of Australia Avenue and Underwood Road to a shared walking and bike riding path
- Providing coordinated pedestrian activated traffic signals on all approaches to the intersection
- Building a new signalised shared walking and bike riding crossing on Australia Avenue
- Upgrading the existing pedestrian crossings at Homebush Bay Drive on/off ramps to shared walking and bike riding crossings
- Building new shared walking and bike riding refuge islands
- Relocating the existing Underwood pedestrian crossing and bus stand at DFO Homebush further east.

Environmental assessment
An environment assessment has been completed to identify potential environmental and community impacts from the design and proposed mitigation measures.
The Review of Environmental Factors discusses how the project will impact:
- The local community through construction, traffic, noise, vibration and visual impacts
- Biodiversity
- Soils and water quality
- Contamination
- Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage.
