Recent environmental investigations have revealed that sections of Marri Badoo Reserve are affected by asbestos.

To contain the asbestos materials, and ensure Marri Badoo is made safe, Council is installing a capping layer of crushed sandstone to affected areas of the reserve.

Work will take place from 7am Monday 24 August to 5pm Friday 28 August 2026. While remediation is in progress, please do not enter the works area.

Is there a risk?
NSW Health advises that asbestos presents a risk to human health if fibres become airborne and can be ingested or inhaled. While buried asbestos is generally at a very low risk of becoming exposed, it is important that Council identify sites where asbestos materials may be present and act should contamination be found.

To ensure Marri Badoo Reserve remains safe for long-term community use, Council has commissioned licensed asbestos contractors to undertake works.

All appropriate NSW Environment Protection Agency and SafeWork NSW protocols will be followed.

Remediation works
The remediation works will be undertaken by a licensed asbestos contractor and will be overseen by an independent licensed asbestos assessor.
The reserve will be re-opened once the assessor has signed-off on Marri Badoo as being safe for public use.

When and where will work take place?
The remediation works will focus on the red area marked ‘closed’ on the map.

Work will take place from 7.00am to 5.00pm Monday 24 August to Friday 28 August 2026 (subject to weather and site conditions). Please do not enter the closed area during this time.

On completion of the works, the site will be restored to its proper condition and re-opened for public use.

Environment and safety precautions
During works, large sections of the reserve will need to be fenced and will not be publicly accessible. Appropriate safety controls will be in place, including barricades around the work areas to create an exclusion zone and keep the community safe.

Background fibre air-quality monitors will be used during works involving contaminated soils.

Contractors will wear personal protective equipment, potentially including full face masks and coveralls in line with SafeWork NSW requirements.
