There are several reasons why Parramatta experiences regular flooding such as the high percentage of hard surfaces which cause rapid rainfall runoff, or high tides in the Parramatta River reducing the amount of water that can exit the stormwater system.
Many of Council’s flood projects are related to mapping the way water travels through the catchment, particularly during heavy storms. Council also undertakes flood mitigation works including upgrades to stormwater and other drainage projects.
Council’s award-winning FloodSmart service was also developed to provide our community with early warnings about approaching flood conditions.
This committee plays a key role in providing strategic, expert, and impartial advice to the Council on the development, implementation, and monitoring of a variety of flood projects. This includes review of the City of Parramatta’s many Flood Studies and flood related planning controls. The views of the committee will help to inform City of Parramatta’s flood strategy.
For specific information on the role of the Floodplain Risk Management Committee, please refer to the Terms of Reference in the Resources section of this page. Hard copies of the Terms of Reference will be available at all City of Parramatta libraries and at the Customer Service Centre located within PHIVE (5 Parramatta Square, Parramatta).
