Floodplain Risk Management Committee

Flooding in our community

The Parramatta River is central to our City’s identity. From the earliest days, the changeable nature of the river has also brought with it the risk of flooding.

Today, our CBD is one of the most flash-flood affected areas in the country. Our challenge is to live with the river in all its various conditions.

Managing current and future flood risk is up to all of us.

In early 2025, Council sought expressions of interest from community members to join our Floodplain Risk Management Committee.

What does the Floodplain Risk Management Committee do?

The NSW Government requires that all local councils manage flood risks within their area.

The Floodplain Risk Management Committee supports the City of Parramatta’s floodplain risk management process as set out in the NSW Governments Flood Prone Land Policy.

The goal of the Floodplain Risk Management Committee is to help prepare our community for the risk of flooding from the Parramatta River and all our other waterways. It also considers flooding from the stormwater system and the dangers of ‘overland flow’ – floodwaters that move through the catchment.

The committee plays a key role in providing strategic, expert, and impartial advice to Council on the development, implementation, and monitoring of a variety of flood projects. This may include review of the City of Parramatta’s many Flood Studies and planned flood mitigation projects. The views of the committee will help to inform City of Parramatta’s Floodplain Risk Management Strategy.
