Greening Albion Street with Proposed Southbound One-Way Traffic

Project background

Heat mapping has identified Albion Street as one of the hottest streets in the Parramatta LGA. Increasing the tree canopy and improving shade coverage in Harris Park has also been identified by the community as a priority, supporting Council’s focus on delivering cooler, greener and more comfortable local streets.

Between 17 November and 8 December 2025, Council sought community feedback on street design options for greening Albion Street, Harris Park, aimed atreducing urban heat and improving local amenity. The community consultation indicated overall support (91%) to have trees planted in Albion Street.

During consultation, a total of 121 responses were received. The results were as follows:

  • Option 1: Tree planting for Albion Street while retaining two‑way traffic, with some loss of on street parking, received 33% of the votes (40 submissions).
  • Option 2: Tree planting for Albion Street with Albion Street converted to a one-way street and no loss of on street parking, received 58% of the votes (70 submissions).
  • Option 3: No changes to Albion Street and no support for tree planting, received 9% of the votes (11 submissions).

The feedback received indicated that there is strong overall support for tree planting on Albion Street, with a preference for conversion to one-way traffic flow (option 2), which retains existing street parking levels.

While some respondents supported the retention of two-way traffic flows (option 1), further investigation found that this option would result in the loss of approximately 11 parking spaces. As a result, this option has not been progressed further.

As the majority of community feedback supported maintaining parking on Albion Street, the one-way design has been progressed and is now being presented for further consultation.

The proposed design allows trees to be planted further into the roadway and away from overhead power lines. This provides more space for larger tree species, helping to deliver a greater shade canopy and an immediate cooling effect for the street.

The street will be further enhanced with upgrades to the Western footpath and the inclusion of understorey planting beneath the newly planted trees.
