Proposed roundabout and other road improvements on Spurway Street, Ermington

Project background

As our cities grow, many high-density and frequently used areas are increasingly impacted by traffic congestion and conflicting vehicle movements as more people are using the space. The City of Parramatta has been listening to the community, noting reports of near misses, and suggestions over the years. As a result, Council has identified several high-priority intersections that would benefit from additional traffic management measures to improve road safety, reduce conflict traffic flow and congestion.

  • Spurway Street in Ermington is a commonly used route for residents and visitors to reach the town centre and shopping area on Betty Cuthbert Avenue. The existing road design has experienced difficulties managing the volume of traffic, causing congestion that can spill onto Victoria Road and raising safety issues from conflicting vehicle movements.
  • To address these concerns, Council proposes installing a roundabout at the intersection of Spurway Street and Jackson Street, along with a median strip on Spurway Street to restrict right turn access at Betty Cuthbert Avenue, and a speed cushion to reduce the speed of vehicles from Victoria Road.
  • These changes are intended to direct traffic from Victoria Road to the Cuthbert Avenue shopping area via the new roundabout, reducing queuing and wait times on Spurway Street. This proposal aims to reduce congestion and enhance road safety by changing the traffic flow, reducing vehicle speeds and minimising conflicting traffic movements.
  • Additionally, pedestrian refuge islands are proposed on Spurway Street and Jackson Street to allow safer crossing in two stages. A ‘No Right Turn – vehicles under 9m excepted’ restriction is also proposed in Jackson Street at Club Lane to further improve traffic safety and flow.
