Over the past few weeks, Council has overseen construction works at Doyle Ground to deliver improved drainage and upgrades to sporting facilities.
Despite soil studies being conducted prior to the start of works, excavation in the work area revealed unexpected fibro fragments buried within the soil underneath the grassed surface of the park.
When the asbestos containing material was found, City of Parramatta's project team ordered the contractors to stop work and secure the site. In-line with Council's contamination protocols, specialists were called in, materials were covered with special fabric, and an exclusion zone, using barricades, was created.
Excavation of the area, and the removal of contaminated soil, will take place on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 June 2026.
As a precautionary measure, the playground and fitness equipment area at the southwest corner of Doyle Ground (corner of Buller Street and Fennell Street) will be closed to the public.
Contractors qualified to safely deal with asbestos materials will oversee the works, and put in place precautionary safety controls appropriate for handling potentially asbestos affected soil.
Air-quality monitoring will be carried out during the works to confirm safety controls used at the site are effective and there is no risk to the public.
Whether further fibro is found during these works or not, all excavated soil will be safely removed from the site and transported securely to an appropriate waste facility.
